January is Glaucoma Awareness Month.
Glaucoma is a group of diseases in which increased pressure in the eye damages the eye's optic nerve and can result in irreversible vision loss and blindness. There are often no symptoms in the early stages of the disease so many people do not even know they have it until the disease has progressed. Early detection and treatment cannot be overemphasized. Proper and ongoing medical care is essential to prevent blindness- do not wait for symptoms to see your eye doctor!
When people with glaucoma are diagnosed and treated at an early stage many may not lose significant vision. Unfortunately, some will develop low vision. Those with significant vision loss may experience problems with glare, lighting, contrast and have difficulties with activities of daily living.
The good news is there are a variety of products designed to help those with low vision lead an independent lifestyle and continue to do the things they love.
If you or someone you know has lost vision due to glaucoma or any other cause, Cleveland Sight Center can help. Call 216-791-8118 for more information.
